Mission

The Friends of Glebe Mountain’s primary mission is to preserve and protect Glebe Mountain and its environs in a manner consistent with the stated intent and spirit of the current Town Plans of Londonderry and Windham by:

  • Providing timely information to members and other interested parties on current developments related to Glebe Mountain
  • Assisting members with their requests for authoritative information on industrial wind energy and by
  • Galvanizing informed opposition to threats to Glebe Mountain that are inconsistent with the current Londonderry and Windham Town Plans.

About Us

The Friends of Glebe Mountain (FGM) was formed by the organizers of the June-September 2005 petition initiative that read “We the undersigned are against the proposed industrial wind plant on Glebe Mountain”.

This extraordinarily successful petition generated support from over 1,800 individuals comprised primarily of residents and property owners of Londonderry, Windham and the surrounding towns of Landgrove, Peru, Weston, West Townshend, Jamaica, Andover, Chester, Bondville, and Winhall.

FGM’s efforts along with those of other supporting organizations (e.g. The Glebe Mountain Group) were strongly endorsed by Londonderry residents who on February 24, 2006 voted against industrial wind on Glebe by a margin of 2:1.

Shortly thereafter Londonderry residents approved a $100,000 defense fund for wind related legal expenses and the Londonderry Select Board sent a letter to the Vermont Public Service Board requesting that any petition for the proposed project be dismissed. In May 2006 the developer withdrew from the project.

Recently, FGM learned that a German owned developer of industrial wind plants is exploring Glebe Mountain as a potential project site. Consequently, FGM has been reactivated.

FGM remains a 100% voluntary and informal organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Glebe Mountain and its environs from development that is inconsistent with the Town Plans of Londonderry and Windham - both of which prohibit industrial wind on Glebe. In deference to the concerns of many FGM supporters regarding controversies that often pit neighbor against neighbor, the list of FGM supporters remains strictly confidential.
